We estimate the relationship between neighborhood violence and psychological well-being using nationally representative panel data from South Africa. use on household-level perceptions of as well reported crimes local media reports to measure violence. First, we find poor live in neighborhoods that they perceive have higher levels objectively more Second, both perceived objective are strongly linked elevated depressive symptoms an increased likelihood being at risk depression. Finally, show living urban with high while is predictive future poverty our sample.
